PieFed 1.8 is released - multi-image posts, reposter filter, new admin tools

Gallery posts, which is an image post with multiple images in it, compatible with Mastodon and Pixelfed. Check out this example from Mastodon.
“Reposters” as a separate thing from “Bots” with the same Show and Hide options for filtering that bots have. Reposters are more targeted, with higher quality content than true bots and often have a human operator writing comments. However many people find this inauthentic so now they can be filtered out. /c/microblogs can show posts from people you’re following OR all posts.
Recent hashtags shown on the home page sidebar.
Support for receiving posts with jpegxl images.
Communities can have a default hashtag for new posts - posters can edit or remove it if they want.

For admins:

Option to manually approve posts by new accounts, to cut down on spam while having open registrations (no approval on the new account). This will let people dip their toes in without waiting.
Easily contact other instance admins, see /admin/instances
Vote manipulation detection tools for simple sockpuppets and complex coordinated voting networks. See /admin/voting
Serial downvoter report showing who made lots of downvotes against a single person in a short time.
Other bot detection tools - e.g. easily spot unnatural runs of very quick post creation.
Display list of alts on user profiles to more easily investigate activity by alts.
Filter emoji with keywords rather than importing absolutely everything - this will speed up the emoji reaction dialog.
Identify instances likely to be used by spammers in future. See /admin/instances?filter=liability
Microblog posts with no replies can be automatically deleted - set the MICROBLOG_CONTENT_RETENTION environment variable to how many months you want to keep them for.

Slightly off topic, but is hosting a PieFed instance becoming the better option over a lemmy one these days? Any thoughts there?

May I ask why? No worries if you don’t want to share but I have been running a private instance of lemmy for a while now, what is better about piefed?

My comment is probably biaised because i’m part of PieFed team (translation, wiki, idea, issue…). I hope more devs will join us :)

On the moderation side, features, PieFed reached a good maturity. We have good tools against bot, and other tools that improve our community. I dunno how other fediverse software handle that.

On UI, we are fine, there is a bottom nav bar, a search bar it works well on mobile. It is visually clean except lengthy community and menu. There is room for improvement compared to Lemmy and Mbin. It will be adressed soon :)

The main thing that most Lemmy users will miss are mobile app because PieFed API are not complete or app are in developpement. Also that’s because PieFed improve and grow at a very fast space.

However, you can use PWA (progressive web app), it works well. Also Lemmy v1.0 will catch up some piefed feature.

If you are interested, you can try it on yunohost or create an alt to try it. :)

Thank you for your thoughtful reply and taking the time to do so. Yah I am currently running a lemmy instance that is working quite well with some minor issues (pict-rs not generating thumbnails from local files that are uploaded, and federating to certain instances like dbzero). So my curiosity is really from the perspective of is the grass really greener or are there significant benefits to starting up a new instance running PieFed as I assume there are no sane pathways to migrate from a lemmy instance to a PieFed one. Either way I appreciate your response, things to think about for $3000 Alex! 🤣

What do the multi-image posts look like when federated to Lemmy? Even if I don’t see the extra images, I hope there’s at least some sign I’m missing something so I can go looking elsewhere.

Lemmy just displays the first image and ignores the rest.

In a future version maybe we can insert the images into the post body, or make Lemmy link to the PF version of the post.

Hmm. Obviously compatibility is tough, but I’d say the worst kind of fallback is the “I’m not seeing what other people are seeing, but I don’t know what I’m missing and there’s nothing to even indicate to be that I am missing anything” version…

Until the compatibility (or more obvious incompatibility) is written into the Lemmy server and my client, and then that’s deployed to my server, I worry that anytime I see something say something that doesn’t obviously line up with the photo, I’m going up wonder “are they misinterpreting this picture, or are they seeing a different picture?”

I feel like a better fallback, honestly, would just be a link that says “ALBUM” because if someone is assembling an image gallery, then only showing the first image and discarding the rest is probably never their intention. They picked multiple images for a reason.

For me it was the missing support for “auto fill” when using Link posts on Voyager. Small issue, but annoying enough. Also PieFed.social blocking some stuff without it being obvious why at the beginning. I could have changed instances though.
