The European Council doubles down on the @EUCommission's awful idea to acknowledge a "legitimate interest" in building slop machines on our data without our consent.
Those insufferable people! They ought to represent us. Instead, they're selling us to the latest techno-capitalist hype.
While we struggle with issues they should be fixing, they're working hard to enrich those who are causing many of our problems.
But they'll always act surprised when people complain that our system is broken.
I wonder whether the @EUCommission and the European Parliament have heard about the AdFection attack vector by now.
For years, they have done too little to rein in the online marketing industry. Now the monster they let grow and prosper exposes them to espionage.
Politicians, this should be your wake-up call. Ditch the Digital Omnibus. Give us strong privacy laws and enforce them properly. Protect us - and yourselves!

The Citizen Lab reports on targeted ads as a vector to install spyware on devices. Some of the ads reached government networks.
All of this is possible because the online marketing industry gathers enough personal data to identify people. Even government officials.
This should teach our politicians a much needed lesson: weak privacy protection exposes everyone, including (especially) them, to all sorts of threats.

Terms such as "digital privacy" and "digital rights" have been vexing me lately. I think those terms imply that our rights originate from and exist only within a digital space - they do not! And they are certainly not meant to follow the rules of those who create digital spaces.
The technologies may be digital, but our fundamental rights are certainly not!

Culling our rights under the guise of "cutting regulatory red tape" and "reducing bureaucracy" for businesses will not cure the economy of its strucrural ailings caused by decades of mismanagement and elitist value extraction.
It will just harm us all.
If the economy won't work without destroying the planet and taking away our freedom, we need a different economy!
We should vote those politicians and their "deregulation" agendas out of office whenever we can!

The author of a well known book on information, privacy, and capitalism refers to one of the humans who brought cases against Google before Spanish courts to fight for their right to be forgotten by their full name and also describes the merits of their case - exactly what this person wanted to be forgotten.
Obviously, one doesn't have to understand and internalize what privacy really means to write and sell books about it. Disappointing.

This was something new for me. Today, I presented my first rather exploratory work "Tipping the Scales - The Weight of Legislative Challenges to Privacy Laws" at this year's Critical Legal Conference in London.
Each of the boards tries to raise awareness for the gravity (rather literally) of legislative interferences with our privacy rights by ... well ... being really heavy.
