Catodon blog URL and other questions

Today, the URL of your standalone blog page in Catodon is using this structure: https://catodon.rocks/@catodon/blog , so /@user/blog. Would this be a reason for you to not host your blog on a Catodon server? Is a domain.com/customblogname URL better? Would this be good enough, or is a URL structured like customblogname.domain.com a prerequisite for your blog?

In general, which are, for you, the things that the platform that hosts your blog must absolutely have, and which are your nice-to-haves? Any features that you haven't seen in any software, but you think are a good idea for a blogging platform?

Thanks!

This was fun to watch and think of all the people that stick the stupid "slop" label on anything touched by AI. This person used AI to improve gnome-software. At the left side of the video you see the "slop", AI-optimized version. At the right side is the superior, written-by-hand official version.

(Spoiler: One takes 8.4s and the other one takes 28.2s for the same tasks.)

Catodon recently implemented Mobilizon/Gancio events, but users on Mastodon or other platforms see events as posts that they can't interract with. This makes events on fedi far less useful. We're gonna change that - we'll create an events.bot account that users from other platforms will be able to send a DM to, and respond to an event (Attend/Deny) via the bot. This way, anyone on fedi will be able to attend an event originally published in Catodon.

I'm in a somewhat awkward position - but since it's about security, and the only way to (hopefully) reach all Sharkey admins and bring this to their attention is by making a public post, I'll do just that.

You probably know that Sharkey is now based on a Misskey version that is 18 months old - falling behind is very understandable, especially for a long standing fork. But since almost 500 fediverse servers are running on Sharkey (495 according to fedidb), at least security releases are essential.

So I have to let you know that we have now notified the Sharkey devs twice about several upstream vulnerabilities we found (and fixed) in Catodon, with the first time being over a month ago. The latest stable Sharkey release was almost 5 months ago, which means they have yet to be patched in a stable release. In the meantime Misskey has also released security fixes, which have also not landed in a stable release yet.

This is not an attack on Sharkey, I hope this comes as a wakeup call, because Sharkey has truly been a great platform. But the hundreds of Sharkey admins (and users) should know about the unpatched vulnerabilities the software currently carries.

Catodon now has Mobilizon/Gancio compatible events

Still somewhat experimental, as it was just merged, but deployed on catodon.rocks and should work as expected - drop me a line if you see a bug. Will be officially released in Catodon 26.11.0 "Nyan Cat".

You can find the Events page in your navigation bar (under "Show more" by default), and you can post a new event either from that page or from the regular posting form, like how you would create a poll.

Have fun

"I don't understand this whole idiotic concept of "don't use AI for X".

Here's a new rule just for you: don't use compilers for any of your kernel submissions.

Because if you can't show that you really understand what the machine is actually doing by writing your code in assembler, then I don't want to see your code contribution. You clearly aren't competent if you can't write it that way.

And btw, you had better not use an editor to write that commit message either.

Because I need you to show me that you can actually write a good commit message without using tools that make it easy to backspace and hide the mistakes you made while typing.

Ok?

Because otherwise those tool-assisted commits of yours clearly aren't showing that you know what you are doing.

Do you not see how UTTERLY STUPID those kinds of rules would be?

So no. We're not going to make stupid rules that say "you can't use tools for X".

The kind of expectations I have is that people do their best and I expect people to understand what they are doing.

But that understanding has very little to do with what tools they use.

And quite honestly, in my experience, the people I respect and call intelligent are not the ones that shy away from using new and interesting tools."
