Another #rust #askfedi since the last one was pretty successful (ended up going with https://codeberg.org/GramEditor/gram and liking it a lot)

At the risk of being called Java-brained:

Is anyone using dependency injection in their rust code? I've noticed that a lot of the boilerplate I'm writing in tests is just putting structs in other structs and it's detracting from the actual point of the tests.

The last 2 weeks I've had people show up to repair cafe with rear wheel issues on their bikes but only one person showed up each time. I really need to get better at advertising this but because my only Internet presence is on the fediverse and closed chat groups it's always slow.

Anyway if no one shows up I hang out at a cool cafe and write code so it's not too bad.

The pouch open, showing that it can hold a laptop, a pen and a notebook.

My old laptop pouch: an Amazon giftwrap bag that's at least a couple of years old and splitting at the seams

Made a laptop bag with some leftover fabric scraps.

Entirely hand sewn because I didn't feel like getting the machine down.

There is a pen pocket, 2 full sized side pockets, loops for adding a shoulder strap and a handle. The material on the outside and for the handles has reflective pinstripes which match the side pockets on my backpack.

Repair cafe this Friday again. Also if you haven't been there but live nearby I highly recommend checking out Principles coffee house, it's a great shop.

Almost forgot to post this, who's coming to repair cafe tomorrow and do you need any special tools that I don't usually bring?

A 5 gallon (20L) wooden barrel with AC condensate hoses coming in the top and a black hose coming out of the bottom to the irrigation system.

Below it are large basil and parsley plants and the end of a grapevine creeps along the fence it sits on

A close up of a terracotta cup that is usually embedded in the soil slowly leaking water out.

It is being pulled out for display but partly hidden by basil leaves

An open compost bin, it is embedded in the planter box and has a large mint plant to one side. On the other side of the mint plant is a grapevine that is creeping along the fence in the background.

On the other side of the compost bin is a mostly empty patch of soil with a terracotta hand poking out of it and you can see the edge of a strawberry bush in the picture.

A picture of the whole thing with some children's toys in the foreground and a number of row houses in the background.

It's a cedar box along the whole side of the balcony with a number of plants in it.

From left to right are:

The compost bin

Parsley

The water barrel

A few years ago I built a long planter box for my balcony with a couple of really fun features.

The 5 gallon barrel is filled from our AC and upstairs neighbor's AC and then drains into a passive irrigation system made up of terracotta cups buried in the soil.

In the middle is an in-ground compost bin with a bunch of over caffeinated worms who go around feeding all the plants.

Something about the completely non-electrical automation is a lot of fun to me
